The Mégane needs no introduction. Launched in 1995, it spans the generations with global sales today standing at 7 million. This true benchmark for the compact saloon segment is now reinventing itself and enhancing its range with a plug-in hybrid engine. The New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in completes the much-anticipated trio of Renault’s first hybrid range, following January’s presentation of the All-new Clio E-TECH and the All-new Captur E-TECH Plug-in at the Brussels Motor Show.

Versatility and performance: a hybrid through and through

The New Mégane’s E-TECH Plug-in hybrid engine is the result of technologies developed by the Alliance and by Renault Engineering. It benefits directly from the electric vehicle expertise gained over more than ten years by the Groupe Renault and the energy-management experience of the Renault F1 Team. No fewer than 150 patents were filed in the process of creating this innovative solution on the leading models from the Renault range.

Result: the New Mégane E-TECH Plug-in offers a new driving experience with 100% electric starting and a whole new pleasure at the wheel. It boasts an optimum versatility with a range of 50 km at up 135 km/h in the mixed cycle (WLTP) and up to 65 km in the urban cycle (WLTP City). So it’s just as good for those everyday family errands – with zero fuel consumption – as it is for long holiday trips.

From racetrack to road – how Groupe Renault capitalises its F1 expertise

Formula 1 is a true testbed for our production vehicles, and the development of this new E-TECH Plug-in engine is a perfect example of this.

It consists of a combustion engine coupled to two electric engines supplied by a battery. The assembly is handled through an innovative multi-mode dog-clutch gearbox which is a direct product of our F1 expertise. Gear changes are optimised for a whole new driving comfort.

This transfer of knowledge also manifests itself in the system for energy recovery during braking, optimised for the fastest possible battery recharging in between plug-ins. A must in F1 which is now being taken up in our production vehicles.

Core-market hybrid range

By offering the E-TECH hybrid engine on the All-new Clio and the E-TECH Plug-in hybrid engine on the All-new Captur and New Mégane, the Groupe Renault confirms its intention to offer an electric experience to the core market and to increase the electrification of its range by 2022, with eight 100% electric models and twelve electrified models (hybrids and plug-in hybrids).
