INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA AND TRANSPHOBIA

Bandeau Our corporate and social responsibility
Inclusion, respect, tolerance, everyone thinks that these values are fundamental, but what is it really like in the workplace? Just imagine… You are at the coffee machine and your colleagues are discussing their holiday plans. You keep quiet. You can’t mention the person with whom you are going to share yours. How do you feel? How do your colleagues interpret this silence? Such a scene is the reality for about 50 per cent of all LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people at work. Keeping their sexual orientation secret requires almost permanent self-control and can be a source of stress and demotivation.

On 17 May, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, we talk to Christine Bruhat, Head of Diversity - Groupe Renault.

What is the Group doing to take employee diversity into account and ensure cohesion and performance?

C.B.: Our role on a day to day basis is to contribute in such a way that each can find his or her place in the company and that each has the means for personal development. Our work and private lives are interwoven. You don’t choose to leave your sexual orientation at home when you set off for work in the morning. Yet it is crucial to be yourself.  Also, we regularly organise awareness actions within Groupe Renault. For example, we have developed a Serious Game, ‘’Experiencing diversity together’’, to which every colleague has access.  It is designed to raise awareness of the various diversity issues in the work context and, by extension, in our personal lives. It has 7 modules, including one on sexual orientation and gender identity. They are inspired by real cases of discrimination at work.

There is also the Yammer “MOBILIZE Diversity” community. This is an open group, where every colleague can talk about any topic related to diversity, including sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Group’s inclusion policy consists of understanding and valuing individual contributions and differences, to create an environment favourable both to the expression of the talent of each one of us and to our collective performance.

Do you have a message for us on this International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia?

My wish is for all LGBT people to feel comfortable talking openly about who they are, their family life and holidays… if they want to, of course!

Deconstructing the stereotypes and received ideas, both of which are sources of discrimination, is essential if every colleague is to able to be him/herself in his/her professional life.
